Our Opportunities

WESLEYAN SUMMER GRANTS OPEN APPLICATION PERIOD: JANUARY 27 – FEBRUARY 27, 2020
ANY APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AFTER MIDNIGHT ON FEBRUARY 27 WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

If you have any questions about your eligibility, requirements of a particular grant, or the application process, please contact Sarah McNamara, Associate Director of Internships and Campus Recruiting via email wseg@wesleyan.edu.

Wesleyan Summer Grants are funding resources awarded through the Gordon Career Center which allow students to pursue no- or low-pay career-related summer experiences. These resources include Wesleyan Summer Experience Grants, Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship Grants, named grants, etc. Funding can be awarded up to $5,000.

Summer experiences can take place in the U.S. and abroad and can include career-related opportunities in the following areas:

  • Internships
  • Faculty-Mentored Research
  • Language Study
  • Volunteer Work
  • Field Study
  • Academic Program

To be considered for funding, the opportunity must be:

  • Full-time, at least 8 weeks with a minimum of 240 total hours.
  • Take place during Summer 2020 (May – August). Opportunities that do not take place during this time will not be considered for funding.

Please Note: The funding resources listed under “Our” in the Opportunities navigation are part of the Wesleyan Summer Grants program and this application process is specific to only these grants. For other programs and resources on campus, please click on “External” from the Opportunities tab for more information.

WHO CAN APPLY?
The majority of funding opportunities offered through the Wesleyan Summer Grants Program are reserved for rising juniors and seniors who are actively enrolled at the time they apply. However, there is very limited funding available for first-year students and graduating seniors. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated financial need for the majority of grants. Students who have previously received a Wesleyan Summer Grant are not eligible for funding. Please review each grant for specific eligibility and requirements.

STILL FIGURING OUT YOUR SUMMER PLANS?
You can still apply if you have not secured your summer experience. Your application will reflect the opportunity you are currently pursuing. If chosen for funding, you will have the ability to submit a revised application if your plans have changed and you have a different summer opportunity. All revisions will be reviewed before funding is determined.

WHAT TYPES OF GRANTS ARE THERE?
There are many grants that fall into the Wesleyan Summer Grants Program – some are very general in nature and support a variety of opportunities while others have specific requirements. Grants are available in the following areas:

  • All Summer Experiences: These grants are open to students pursuing opportunities in any industry, research, volunteer work, or any other summer experience related to their post-graduate career goals.
  • Arts, Music, Journalism/Digital Media Summer Experiences
  • Business Related Summer Experiences
  • Experiences Related to Jewish and Israel Studies
  • Location Specific Summer Experiences
  • Non-Profit Summer Experiences
  • Science Related Summer Experiences
  • Social Impact and Entrepreneurship Summer Experiences
  • Social Justice/Services, Humanitarian Efforts and Political Activism Summer Experiences
  • Specific Majors/Society/Group
  • Veterans

It is the applicant’s responsibility to review each grant for specific eligibility and requirements. Available grants will be listed in January 2020.

GRANTS WITH AN INTERNSHIP
The following internship opportunities are funded through this program. If you are interested in one of these internships, your grant application will reflect that opportunity.

  • Child Advocacy Endowed Wesleyan Summer Experience Fund: The recipient of this grant is selected for the Lawyers for Children Social Work Interns Program
  • John W. Macy Jr. ’38 Internship: Recipients spend the summer as special interns in the Government Accountability Office in Washington, D.C.
  • Nancy Campbell Internship in Historic Preservation: Internship with The National Trust for Historic Preservation

SELECTION CRITERIA
Applications will be reviewed by the Wesleyan Summer Grants Committee and evaluated on the basis of:

  1. Budget: Feasibility, you have researched your costs and put together a clear budget outlining your request.
  2. Essays: Ability to convey your story to the committee. This is your chance to tell the committee about yourself, the opportunity, and your goals.
  3. Overall clarity of the application.
  4. Approved resume (required in order for application to be considered). Please check Handshake to see if your resume has been approved.

Some grants (the Child Advocacy, the Campbell, Ganbarg, Invisible Men, the Macy, the Miller, and WIJSL) also have additional, supplemental questions and/or required documents. After clicking “Finish and Submit” on your Grants application you will be prompted to move to the Recommended Opportunities page where you will need to apply to each of these individual opportunities to complete the supplemental questions or upload additional documents.

Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated financial need for the majority of grants. Please review each grant for specific eligibility and requirements.

APPOINTMENTS
If you need help getting your resume approved, finding summer opportunities, or would like to review your application materials, please schedule a career advising or drop-in appointment with a staff member from the Gordon Career Center. Appointments can be scheduled online on Handshake, via phone 860-685-2180, or in-person during business hours.

RECEIVING YOUR GRANT

If your proposal is selected to receive funding, you will be notified in early April of your funding amount and the necessary steps to receive your funding. At this time, you will have the ability to submit a revision if your plans have changed. In mid-May, after completing the necessary steps to confirm your funding, funds are transferred via direct deposit, which must be set up with Wesleyan in advance. Students who have not yet set up direct deposit may do so by completing the Authorization Agreement for Payroll Direct Deposit Form and returning it to the Payroll Office. As these funds could be 1099 reportable, we recommend that students consult with a tax advisor on how to treat and report this grant for tax purposes. Over the summer you will be required to complete a questionnaire about your experience and write a thank you to your donor(s).

WESLEYAN SUMMER GRANTS OPEN APPLICATION PERIOD: JANUARY 27 – FEBRUARY 27, 2020
